Luke

My anticipation of exactly what I intended to do to Ella disappeared at the sight of a blazing red BMW parked outside my house. It couldn’t be, I told myself.

She couldn’t just turn up like this, could she?

Even Penelope in all her denseness knew better than to show up after two years without warning me first. Except I knew that car well, after all I’m the one who’d bought it for her. Obviously, she hadn’t found a sucker to replace it. While she was married to me, she wanted a new vehicle every year.

Rage rose in me that she would actually come to my house without warning me. I could feel my insides clench as if in the grip of a cold hand. I broke into a cold sweat at the thought of what she might have told Molly. Penelope was a terrible liar. She told some of her friends I used to beat her up. I was shocked when one of them cornered me at a party and started to scold me for being such a prick to her.

I jumped out of the car. If she had tried to ruin the progress Ella and I had made with Molly now… progress that even therapists had been unable to make. All Molly had needed was stability and people who loved her. She had found that with me and Ella.

And now Penelope was back to spoil it all. My fury was such I even forgot Ella was in the car. All I could think of was getting rid of the poison in my house before it infected everything good in my life. I could barely contain my rage as I strode to the house. The door flung open before I even touched it.

Ruby stood there, her brow creased, her face tight with tension. Penelope had that effect on people.

“Hi,” I said and tried to smile. I touched her shoulder. “Everything will be fine. Where is she?”

“In the living room. She told me who she was and then went to the playroom to see Molly,” Ruby said in a low tone. “I couldn’t stop her.”

I stiffened. “What did she tell Molly?”

Ruby shook her head. “I don’t know. She closed the door on me.”

“Where is she now?” I asked urgently.

“In the living room.”

“And Molly?”

“In bed,” Ruby replied.

Ella came running behind me.

I turned to her. “Sorry. I have to deal with this. Give me a few moments, okay?”

“Of course,” she said, looking at me worriedly.

In the living room, I found Penelope leafing through one of my architectural magazines. Something she had never done when we had been married. She heard my footsteps and looked up. She had changed a bit. It was only two years but her face had lost its youthful look. Her eyes looked tired. As if life had disappointed her.

It should have pleased me to see she hadn’t been happy since she left us, but it didn’t. If life had been good to her, she would have left us well alone. That would have been the ideal situation.
